College of HEST Dean's Finalists

On Monday, April 7, the first of three candidates for the College of Health, Education and Social Transformation Dean's position will be on our campus. Rick Marlatt

Dr. Rick Marlatt serves as Associate Dean of the Graduate School and International Affairs at New Mexico State University where he previously served as Director of the School of Teacher Preparation, Administration, and Leadership and received NMSU’s 2020 Leading the Way Award and the 2018 College of Education Emerging Scholars Award.

As Professor of English Language Arts and Literacy Education, his work bridges the fields of teacher education, creative writing, digital literacies, literature study, and sociocultural theory. His most recent work appears in English Education, Research in the Teaching of English, and more.

His leadership at NMSU has prioritized generating equity, access, and diversity across New Mexico’s educator pipelines, and he has been funded for and contributed to over $20 million in sponsored projects such as teacher and principal residencies; recruitment and retention of Native American educators, social workers, and school counselors; development of culturally and linguistically responsive curricula; and more. He received his MFA from the University of California, Riverside and his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He has been a faculty member at NMSU since 2017.

Rashid Ahmed

Dr. Rashid Ahmed is an accomplished academic leader and public health scholar with over 20 years of experience in higher education, research, and health policy across the U.S. and Canada. Currently a tenured professor at Montclair State University, he previously served as the Inaugural Dean of the College for Community Health.

He has led efforts at Hispanic-Serving and Minority-Serving Institutions, advocating for equity and student success. With expertise in securing over $15 million in external funding, he has also championed strategic initiatives to enhance institutional capacity and student outcomes. His leadership focuses on driving social transformation, fostering collaboration, and ensuring access to education for diverse communities. Dr. Ahmed holds a Ph.D. in Biostatistics and advanced degrees in Economics, Statistics, and Educational Policy.

Algerian Hart

Dr. Algerian Hart is the Associate Dean of the McQueary College of Health and Human Services at Missouri State University. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Long Beach State University and both a Master’s and Ph.D. from Washington State University. Dr. Hart has held key roles at Missouri State University, including Vice President for Inclusive Engagement and Associate Dean of the Graduate College. He is also a Professor Emeritus at Western Illinois University.

Beyond academia, Dr. Hart has contributed to the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (NASSS), serving as its President and Chair of its Diversity and Conference Climate Committee. He also participates in accreditation efforts as a Peer Reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission and Faculty Evaluator for the American Council on Education.

An experienced former athlete and coach, Dr. Hart is the author of The Student Athlete’s Guide to College Success and co-author of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Sport. His work focuses on marginalized populations and student-athlete advocacy, making a significant impact in both higher education and sports.
